Celebrating 80 Years!

In 2022, LWML will celebrate 80 years of being Lutheran Women in Mission!

We can take time to look back – reflecting on beginnings, changes, and growth. We should also look forward and consider how we can affect the legacy of the LWML in a positive way.

It might be by extending personal invitations to other women, inviting them to help with a mission service project, attend an LWML event, or help host one.

It might be by including children and grandchildren (your own or by “adopting” some in your congregation) in a service activity.

It might be by modeling joy in proclaiming Christ, supporting missions, and serving others.

It might be by seeking ways to share your faith, bless your family, and impact ministry through the LWML Gifts of Love ministry.

So many reasons to celebrate and so many ways to do it! How will you celebrate?

O give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! (Psalm 105:1)

Tell Others!

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”— and that he had said these things to her (John 20:18).

We tell of things we have seen and witnessed: the account of a wildfire in our backyard, the miracle of birth, and other memorable events — none more memorable than Mary Magdalene’s. Imagine going to the tomb, expecting to see the dead body of the Lord, and instead He is alive and talks to you! This week the church remembers Mary Magdalene. Mary had the joy of seeing the risen Lord on Easter morning. What a witness account to tell the disciples!

The Easter narrative is retold repeatedly, a message the world needs to hear. Our LWML Mission Grants tell the Good News of the risen Lord. Learn about our new grants on the LWML website: mission grants. Support them with your prayers and contributions, and tell others about them.

Planning for a New Season

Summer is here, and many of us are taking time for relaxation. Summer is also a great time to start planning for fall activities — retreats, zone rallies, meetings — in person!

A focus for your group this year could be the “I am the Heart of LWML” campaign. Take the goals and use them as objectives for your group. This is a perfect opportunity for each member to invite someone new to come to an LWML activity or meeting and hear about all the mission grants, participate in mission service activities, or join a Bible study written by one of our members.

Remember, you are the Heart of LWML and as Lutheran Women in Mission, we share the joy and wonder of what is done through the LWML by the grace of God — the resources created, the missions supported, and the ministries blessed.

Freedom in Christ

July 4 — Independence Day — a day to acknowledge the blessings we enjoy as we live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

I love parades: marching bands, floats, kids scrambling for candy; then the flag passes by and everyone stands, places their hands over their hearts, and honors the flag and the republic for which it stands.

At last month’s LWML convention in Lexington, Kentucky, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and we also honored another flag — the Christian flag. We showed our respect for our faith by displaying that flag and reciting the pledge of allegiance to the cross of Christ.

What a blessing it is to live in a country where freedom abounds! It’s an even greater blessing knowing that we are part of God’s family where our freedom from sin and eternal separation from God was paid for on the cross by our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Wow!

To God be the glory, honor, and praise! The LWML 39th Biennial Convention was held live, in person, a celebration of brothers and sisters in Christ proclaiming God’s truth and sharing Jesus’ love with each other — some attending convention for the first time — in Lexington, Kentucky.

There are so many memories and mountain top experiences from “doing convention” in Lexington, that it’s difficult to highlight all of them. Here are only a few:

• hearing the mission grants voting results;
• being inspired through the Word proclaimed in the Bible studies;
• seeing the tremendous number of Gifts from the Heart donations;
• participating in servant events;
• watching the new officers installation;
• experiencing fellowship with “new” friends and “old” ones;
• enjoying Lexington and surroundings;
• hearing the excitement of mission work being done here and abroad;
• laughing out loud when humorous interrupters Jan and Abby were on stage;
• shopping at the LWML Store for resources;
• having fun on the Photo Finish Mission Walk; and
• observing the mission flag and district banner processions.

We’re here!

Thanks be to God! This week “Running the Race … Looking to Jesus,” the LWML 39th Biennial Convention, becomes a reality. LWML sisters and brothers in Christ are assembling in Lexington, Kentucky, to “joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving others” (from the new LWML Mission Statement).

One of the many highlights will be Friday, June 25, when the results of voting for the 2021–2023 mission grants are announced. The delegates voted electronically the last week of May. Waiting with great anticipation, they, along with those attending in person and those watching via livestream, will learn which grants were selected. Learn more about the grant proposals here, and then join in the excitement on June 25 to hear God’s plan for the next biennium.

As attendees at convention, we will:

• Focus on Jesus through God’s Word and Sacrament;
• Joyfully celebrate our salvation with song and prayer; and
• Serve our neighbors through witness and mission.

May we live these convention objectives well beyond our week in Lexington.

“Running the Race … Looking to Jesus”

After two years of planning, the 2021 LWML Convention will be held in Lexington, Kentucky, next week! It feels like we actually have been running a race for this convention, jumping over hurdles along the way. And we have kept looking to Jesus!

One hurdle is the limit on how many people can attend in-person, due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, you can still participate, even if you are unable to physically be there. Go to the LWML website at www.lwml.org/2021-convention to access convention resources, so you can:

• Prepare for the convention by prayerfully reading the pre-convention devotion.

• Go on a Virtual Photo Finish Mission Walk in your area.

• View or download the convention manual and worship folders for the opening service and the sending service, available by June 17.

• Watch the convention via Livestream. You can attend the worship services, listen to the Bible study, hear our Mites in Action speakers and missionaries, and learn which mission grants are chosen for our mite support in the next biennium.
